Aftermarket air filters on modern engines?

DO MODIFICATIONS THAT INCREASE AIR FLOW TO AN EFI ENGINE HELP OR HURT MPG AND OR HP WITHOUT THE COMPUTER BEING TUNED TO COMPENSATE? my fuel trims went from +17 to +10 changing from K&N back to ford. (Its still high but ignore that just look at the drop). I notice no power difference whatsoever. So what was that K&N filter doing? Helping or hurting?
They do both. Kinda like how hot peppers clear out my sinuses helping me breath, but then give me fiery farts causing me to hold my breath.

Oh and whats a fuel trim?

I thought the factory airbox is already a cold air intake of sorts.

My butt itches
Have you tried moist wipes? They really help get those dingleberries and clingons, as well as cool the bungle. Not recommended for hyper wipers.

Oh and whats a fuel trim?

Fuel trim. Numbers give an indIcation of what the ecu is doing to meet fuel demand. The ecu is trying to keep a certain fuel to air ratio. So if load on the engine increases or decreases or you try to accelerate or decelerate, it changes how long the injectors are open each time they fire. That correction is the fuel trim. There are short term fuel trim numbers and long term fuel trim numbers.

That is the simple and incomplete explanation. I wont try to go deeper than that for fear of misleading you. I still have a lot to learn.

I explain it all in my book, 'Engines is goes vroom'.

oh gotcha, has to do w/ the the ol' 14.7:1

For an “in a nut shell” explanation, it’s a pretty good one.

Thay book is my unauthorized biography...
Unless it was deliberately unauthorized for liability reasons, you may want to consider suing for royalties.

I tried to sue but they just claimed the book was based on the life of Bob Dole.

I’ve been running the Banks CAI with an oiled filter on my 2019 chebby diesel for about 15k miles now. I would imagine there is some trade off in the engine being able to breathe versus particulate making it into the motor/dirty oiled sensors.

I also ran a K&N oiled filter/TRD CAI on my 2015 Tundra for about 80k miles.

I’ve never had any issues from them as far as I can tell. If anything, it was a bunch of my money I threw down for no benefit.

My ranger is a stock intake with a STP cheapo paper filter. I’m not worried about it.

All of my engines has still gone vroom!
