We just picked up a clean, low milage '94 Ranger with a 2.3L and 5 speed for my son to drive while he's away at college. It doesn't have power steering, but we would like to add it.

As a result of the Cash for Clunkers stimulus plan our local "U-Pull It" junk yard has an abundance of Exploders, Bronco IIs and V6 Rangers with PS on 'em...but no Ranger 4 bangers.

We pulled a clean pump, gear box, and hoses from a 94 Exploder, and are ready to pt it in the Ranger, but it looking at the wiring diagrams, they show a Power Steering Pressure Switch. I assumed that the switch would be either int he pressure line or the box itself, and would bump up the idle when the steering pressure increases while the engine is below a certain RPM.

Problem is, the stuff we pulled doesn't have a switch or even a boss for a switch. Is the Haynes manual wrong about the switch, or is it something the Rangers ave that the Exploders don't? If it's unique to the Ranger, where is it located?" Is there a chance that the connector is stowed in the engine bay somewhere, or am I going to have to add the wires? If I have to add 'em, can anyone tell me what pins they go to on the PCM?

Thanks in advance for any help!

the switch is mounted in the pressure hose assembly, but as for the where the pig tail would be, youve got me. its either going to be tucked in or plugged off and fastened to the plastic fender well on the drivers side, if it has one.

It's a 5 speed.

You shouldn't notice a problem without the pressure switch unless you really flog that steering wheel. The IAC will still compensate for gentle turning at idle.

Think about it, all the "tight" turning your boy will be doing is for parking. Clutch is disengaged or being slipped for most of that maneuvering, so the switch/idle issue is pretty moot. I wouldn't bother with it.

Thanks for the replies. We will try the install with the parts we have (no switch), and if it becomes a problem we will pick up a 2.3L specific hose with the boss for the switch in it and a switch as well.

I will post up the results when we get it done.

Didn't even try to install without the switch...te connector for the switch is already there with a "dummy load" across the contacts, so we picked up a hose and switch at our local Car Quest for about 40 bucks. Got everything installed, works great. Thanks again for the help!
