I was digging through the threads a few days ago and I read where someone posted something about an accumulator in the fuel system. My truck seems to have 3 filters. Two in the supply (blue) and one in the return line and they are all Fram filters and...they all appear to be fairly new since I can easily read the lettering. So is one of those filters suppose to be an accumulator?? I just put a new sending unit and pump assy in and now it only runs for maybe 5-6 seconds and quits. If i try to start it again the engine rotates fine but it wont run. Some pics would be cool if anyone has any.

do some more research on what an accumulator is, and what it's used for. That should answer your question.

Then if you have a new one you can open a new thread that won't make you seem as if you don't know what you're talking about.

P.S. I'm not trying to be a dick here... just helping you to help yourself.

I was in a hurry last night and I was hoping it would jog someones memory.

I Think I found....

what Im looking for. Had some down time this morning so I dove into the search function and came across the critter i was looking for. Even got a pic!! Im pretty sure my 86 doesn't have the accumulator due to P.O removing it. I dont ever recall seeing anything like it when i was under the truck a couple of days ago.

so, um... where's the pic?

OK Mr Killroy....

For your viewing pleasure and everyone else who may be tuned into this saga...I found the pic of an accumulator. The post was started by a fella named StreetRat. I definitely do not have one of these anywhere on my truck.....

You checked back past the inline fuel pump right? It's a bit hidden but I would assume it's there.

For what it's worth, my 87 has one inline filter just after the inline pump and the accumulator before it. That's it.

I've checked

every inch of the supply and return lines....no accumulator. And to muddy the issue further, the guy behind the parts counter at the dealer said he doubts my truck ever had one because 1986 was the year there were alot of changes in the fuel system on these trucks. WTF??? :shok: Now I dont know what to believe.

I'm pretty sure my '86 dual tank Ranger DOESN'T have an accumulator. If I remember I'll check, probably tomorrow.

Update

Got it to run....intermittently. I was going thru the basics, got air, got fuel, and was checking spark when I had the plug laying on the AC bracket and it fired and RAN!! So i shut it down put the plug back in and it started again, but it wont stay running. Its shutting itself off and on, its falters, catches itself dies, starts up again, runs for a few seconds, dies. Im thinking TFI module but it was replaced last spring. I think it might have 5k on it. Theres a post that showed up today by Derailed and he's having same problem. My IAC is new. Replaced it last Sept.

Update

Put in a new TFI module, since I found out the other one was questionable since I dont know how old it was. It wasn't the original Ford module thats for sure. I got it started after repeated attempts and let it idle in the driveway for 30min. I still cannot say with 100% certainty what the problem is/was since my faith in the little beast is zero. I do have a couple of theories: 1) I noticed it seem to be running out of fuel. So my next move will be a new fuel filter. (the one up towards the engine) I honestly cant remember if I changed it last spring or not....and 2) possible inertia switch abnomality....I have it jumpered at this point.

In Closing...

I going to proclaim this thread as dead. I have come to the conclusion theres no hard, fast rule about this accumulator issue. Apparently some trucks got one and some didn't. I guess mine didn't. Hoefully I didn't waste much of anyone's time, just my own.:annoyed:

I'm calling BS because my 86 Ranger came with one, stock(not that it works, valves so rusted shut it takes the pressure from a compressor to clear the valve) and I've currently got my defective one sitting on the passenger seat while I try to figure out how to reroute the wire that runs from the Fuel Pump Relay to my High Pressure Fuel Pump(because for some reason I've got mV running to the HP instead of Volts). So go back to that parts store and take in a print out of the picture above to him and say that's supposed to come stock in an 86, or... Go here to see about what you may be looking at.

They came in the dual tank rangers, and some single tank rangers and b2's. The accumulator came in two types 1. with a fuel filter in the bottom of the bowl. 2. w/o a fuel filter and both are used to accumulate fuel for the inline high pressure fuel pump.
