Good morning everyone,

On a 2001 Ranger Edge 4.0 I will be replacing my ac compressor, the current one does not engage, I tried applying direct power, same result. I have a specific question. Does anyone know about adding PAG oil to the compressor? Is it pre mixed in with freon? How much and how? Can I add it through any lines from a Schrader Valve? Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Have you bought the compressor yet? The clutch not engaging with direct power is not a compressor problem, that is a clutch problem. You can rent a tool in the auto store and pull the clutch off and put a new one on without disturbing the compressor.

You can also measure the gap behind the compressor clutch. If it's much wider than .040, then it's too wide for the magnet to pull it in. You can activate the A/C from the dash,, and then go out with the engine running and CAREFULLY take a broom handle and strike the front of the clutch and see if it pops in. If it does and the gap measured too wide, you can rent the removal tool. pull it apart, and take one of the shim washers out to close the gap up.

+1 ^^^^

Compressor problem will be a squealing noise from fan belt when you activate AC, because compressor is frozen/locked up

Start engine
Turn on AC
Tap on the front of the AC Clutch with wrench and see if it engages, if so then "air gap" is too big, needs thinner washer, or clutch coil is too weak
In any case changing the clutch would be best, and least expensive, and no recharging needed :)
