A few months ago I swapped my bad A4ld for a m5od, used a brand new 2.9 flywheel and clutch, and the old starter, well it started the first couple of times then it just started grinding, I picked up a starter under warranty and it did the same thing. It engages fine outside of the truck, so I sprayed some paint on the starter and it looked like the starter wasn't close enough to the flywheel. Ive been pushing it off everywhere I go, has anyone else had this problem, or know how to fix it?

The starters between the auto and the manual are different. They are clocked different at the bellhousing. You will need to go buy a starter for a manual transmission.

get you a starter gear for a 90 modle ford escourt it has 10 teeth $25.00 bucks advance auto parts

When you removed the auto flexplate, did you re-use the spacer shim on the manual flywheel? If you did, that may throw off the clearance?

I had (have I guess, just haven't worked on the truck in months) the same issue with my Trans swap, but I went to a.... Idr a 5 speed out of a b2, wasn't m5od. But same starter grinding issue. Guess I'll try the 10 tooth as well...
Did it work for you?

Any word if this worked? Haven't picked up a new gear yet....
