What's the worst that could happen?
Hi everyone. I just finished a string in the 4.0L forum about replacing the heads on a 4.0L OHV. During the suturing up, I ran into a problem with the shift cable. The shift cable's casing separated at the bracket on the firewall so the column lever had no resistance to move the lever on the trans.

At any rate. I got the cable off, but now I'm wondering what position should the lever on the trans be when I re-install the new cable. I've searched the topic and found nothing that explains it. I know it's probably in here somewhere cuz I am sure this has had to have happened to someone.
It seems like there are six positions or detents as you move the lever front to back. I can guess one end is Park and the other One (Low), but which is which? And is there anything I need to be careful of other than the truck falling on me and crushing my skull? Thanks

It depends on how the shift arm is attached to the shift rod

But on most Rangers the shift arm is above the shift rod so PARK would be when arm was as far forward(toward engine) as it will go

Yours looks like its mounted below the shift rod so PARK would be when arm was all the way back(away from engine)
 
I was able to play with it a bit and found that one click toward the rear - from the forward most position - so second position back - and I was able to start the truck. So Neutral or Park?

The 1994 detents are P R N O D 2 1

Well there you go. I know you know what you're talking about and I appreciate your help. Thanks much. Can't wait for the cable to arrive. I'm sure I'll have more questions.
 
Why not just see if the truck will roll with the arm at either stopping point or if it is on stands turn the driveshaft. It will move in all detents but park. As RonD stated the park position will be the arm facing the front of vehicle.

Thanks for that. Just got one side up now, but that's a quick fix. Will definitely give that a go before the cable arrives.
