Just changed the filter & pan gasket on my trans & now it won't move. I can hear and smell bands slipping and a grinding when I go into park.

The parts dealer gave me a "multi" trans fluid & i noticed it replaced Dexron III and Mercon. Is it possible the fluid is causing the problem since it's not Dexron II ?

I would think it would still move even with this fluid, right ? Should I go get some Dexron II or do you think it's just given up? I changed the fluid cause it spewed all the fluid out last night & after refilling I drove it 10 miles or so, and it was fine. It was working fine this morning before I dropped the pan. Any help or advice ? It would be greatly appreciated before I pull the pan & refill with different fluid. Thanks in advance.

As long as it is dexron/mercon it doesn't matter if it is 2,3,4 or 5 it will all work just fine. Is your fluid to the correct level when warm? Recheck what you have, make sure that you have no major leaks and go from there. If it still doesn't move then it may have given up the ghost.

replace with M5odR1. Best thing you can do for an sick A4LD

Got It ! ! !

Was low on fluid, and now working fine, no leaks to be found. I think I overfilled it a little but should be able to take one of the cooler lines off the front & drain a little out.

Thanks so much for the help !

What makes the A4LD puke all of it's fluid out to begin with ? Did it overheat ?
Previous owner told me he was towing a trailer once and about 60 miles from home it puked. He refilled it, drove it home and years later it's still going.

I had another 2WD ranger that did this also. What causes this ?

Overheating causes it.

Hearing and smelling bands was the first sign of low fluid.

You might also want to look into changing the vacuum diaphram on the top side of the transmission.

Heat is what kills any auto amtic transmission. You should already have a cooler behind your grill in front of the radiator. Add another cooler along with the current factory one and go from there. I think Brinker means the Vacuum Modulator which is located on the passenger side of the transmission above the pan about 2 inches from the back of the pan.

^It was called a diaphram at the parts store. You take the inspection cover off in the cab area and it was off to the side. There's a vacuum line going to the intake manifold (steel line)
