i have a 1988 ford ranger 2.9 v6 that is runnin way too rich and bogs down while driving and backfires too. sumtimes dies at stoplights and can smell and see smoke coming from exhaust pipe. i have replaced the map sensor, throttle position sensor, computer, new tune up, installed new exhaust system wit no cat on it, and just now replaced ignition module and didnt help at all... nothing has changed the way this thing runs... need help bad!!!

push rod off? valvetrain uneven...burned valve.... compression bad on a cylinder or three....

++1 check fuel pressure and look at the wires to the O2 sensor/s and get codes

I'll stick with leaking FPR. If no fuel is seen in vacuum line at the FPR, then walk around to the other side of the engine and go to the wire harness were the distributor wiring comes out and find an orange wire that should get bolted to the engine block or head. If it isn't grounded, you get rich running.

Hmmmm!

This description doesn't fit a RICH condition. Bogging and backfiring are indications of LEAN condition. What kind of smoke do you see...and specially how warm is the engine when you see it? Cold engines are supposed to smoke a little black sooty smoke till the engine is warm. Blue smoke after startup is usually valve guides leaking a small amount.
I think I'd be looking at the pressure regulator for sure. Then maybe the Oxys..
Big JIm

thats another thing i have already replaced too lol i forgot to put that on there... i already replaced the FPR and it didnt change anything either... i havent checked for that orange wire that sjr53 was talkin about... and the o2 sensor is the only sensor i havent replaced yet... the smoke i c comin out is black soot and is very bad even after warmin up and immediately turned my whole exhaust pipe black black black lol which leads to me thinkin about the o2 sensor cuz im thinkin maybe its all covered up and messed up that it isnt tellin the computer to give it the right air/fuel ratio or sumtin like that, but im not very mechanically inclined so idk for sure... thanx for all the responses and keep them comin!!!

you should really do a leak before buying so many parts down first.

check the wiring and sensor for the coolant temp.....its free to check, just takes a bit of time and effort....could be simple as the connector is loose or smashed.

stuck open injector or kinked return line etc....

where would that coolant temp be? and i was thinkin about a stuck open injector too but idk cuz ive had two different ase certified shops look at it and nothin has fixed it so far... and the only thing that made this truck start actin up i beleive is that i drove thru a pond one day but its been months ago and i was thinkin maybe a corroded connection or sumtin like that but ive almost replaced all connections and sensors i can think of... im gettin tired of these shops raping me from my money lol

first thing i would have looked at was the coolant temp sensor. if the computer doesn't know the actual temp of the engine, then it will give it the wrong mixture.

right above the thermostat on the front of the engine. There are two. A smaller easy to reach one-wired sensor (not it) and a larger two-wired pain in the ass to reach sensor on the left (that's the one).

It will require a 1" deep socket and removing a few hoses, etc. to remove.

if you drove through a pond, theres a chance your o2 sensor got ruined. did you look under your distributor cap for green corroded crap? its not really great to get any of those sensors wet... Id try the intake temp sensor (passenger side of intake) MAP sensor (firewall)
