I finally came across a '00 Mountaineer for really cheap, and I will most likely be buying it or ending up with it for free depending on how things play out. So I will be transplanting the mountaineer's powertrain into my '00 Ranger, hopefully towards the end of the year.

I am going to find an m5od-r2 4X4 tranny to use (my truck is already a 5 speed, 3.0L, 4X4).

From what I gather I will need the following in order to make everything work:

1. m50dr-2 from '97-'03 F-150
2. 11" clutch, pressure plate, block plate, 164 tooth 50 oz. flywheel, and manual starter from '96 F-150
3. And either an adapter for my BW1354 or upgrade to the BW4406. I don't think the BW4406 will fit, especially since my truck is a regular cab and my current transfer case sits about six inches from the gas tank as it is.

I've heard that I can reuse the clutch slave cylinder I already have since the F-150 has the same part number. But can I also reuse my master cylinder and clutch cable, or will I have to upgrade those as well?

Also, will the 5.0 radiator fit in the ranger? My truck is the same year as the donor vehicle so I am hoping it's at least close to a direct bolt in....

If this all works out you all can count on a THOROUGH build thread in the future, as I like to document projects like this for future reference.

1. m50dr-2 from '97-'03 F-150 only the 4.2 has the same bellhousing as a SBF and you will have to enlarge the holes. An older M5OD from a 5.0 truck would work if you swapped the top cover/shifter assembly from a 97-08 F-150 (of either engine)
2. 11" clutch, pressure plate, block plate, 164 tooth 50 oz. flywheel, and manual starter from '96 F-150

I have an automatic so I haven't really gotten into that but there was a guy in this forum a couple months ago getting an M5OD to work. You might do some digging and see what he and others had to do, it didn't sound like a cut and dry ordeal to me.

Yes, it is a bolt in for the newer trucks. The older trucks had only the 91-94 two row HD 4.0 Explorer radiator for a bolt in upgrade, not the case for you. You also get the thrill of using the factory hoses and engine mounts, done right it will very much look like it came there.

SVTRanger has a very detailed swap about putting an Explorer in his third gen, there will probably be a lot of stuff to carry over for you. :icon_thumby:

Blah Blah Blah

You really need to either start doing homework or sit on the sidelines. I am really tempted to start neg repping you when you are wrong. Nothing personal but I can't remember you ever really having anything V8 swap related that was right, it has been going on for quite awhile.

I know when I did mine, I used an older m5od r2 out of a bronco with a small block. I had to cut the floor a little and then bent the shifted back a little. I used the explorers center console to cover everything too. Don't forget to bypass the neutral safety switch also and find the wires for reverse lights in the harness too. And it is true the radiator will fit. I'm not sure on if the ranger clutch and slave will work but i just used a starter, flywheel, clutch and slave for the same vehicle I got the tranny and t case out of. My factory master still works. I had to notch my frame for my t case to fit. Don't forget, you will need to shorten your rear driveshaft and build a custom front one depending on what t case you go with. Good luck!

Thanks for the help everyone. I just picked up the Mountaineer a few days ago, so the project has officially begun...well at least the parts gathering has begun. I still need to find an m5r2 and bw4406.

I'll start a new thread some time soon with some pics of the Mountaineer and my Ranger, but the conversion process won't really start until around December most likely...unless my motor blows up before then lol.

Im starting the same project, but mine is going to be a awd 5 speed. Does anybody have any insight on what transfer case I can use to be able to use 5 speed and AWD?

I think you are stuck with the Explorer T-case for the AWD. Not sure what manual transmissions it'll connect to.

I am pretty sure it is the fullsize pattern so it would take a fullsize 4wd trans. IIRC it is computer controlled, and it will be screaming bloody murder because it would have a trans it can talk to. Maybe you could fix that with a tune... :icon_confused:

I know some older (70's-80's) trucks were AWD/fulltime 4wd. My cousin in law had a Chevy K20 that was setup that way until he decided to gain 5mpg and ditch it. Dodge or Jeep might have done something similar so you could get a driverside drop t-case.

it should be ok with the slpoder awd case.

put one in a 2wd edge with intentions of converting to awd along with regular ranger installs but i dont know if the guy ever did that or not. i dont remember it being electronic, but we did have a speed sensor issue i had to adapt somehow on the edge truck, the others were older rigs. just dont remember the details of that....i think it was because of his rear end swap from a different truck... i get shit mixed up sometimes:thefinger:

the explorer forums should have a trainload of info.

Yes they do. www.4x4central.com

I have a hard time thinking the 4406 won't fit, but all of my experience is with Explorers or SCAB Rangers. Keep in mind that if the viscous coupling is bad in the AWD (4403/4404) case, you'll burn up the front differential. Going to a select shift T-case is a much better option.

i actually think im going to go with a auto trans.

truck will be a daily driver, so i think a c4 will not be sufficent. is there another trans that would hold 450HP?

A rebuilt one to handle that much power. The Expo trans will NOT take that much power on a stock setup.
