Hello All,

I have a 98 ranger that stopped running at just above idle speed. It was making a clattering noise which I thought was just a noisy valve train then last week the noise got worse and the engine shut off at close to idle speed.
I pulled the front cover off the engine and found the bolt that holds the cam sprocket broke off. From the looks of it it had been loose for a while and that is wher the noise was most likely coming from.
I'm looking at get a new timing chain set and I'll need a new key way and cam bolt.
Anyone hear of this happening and how likely am I to have a bent valve now?
Once the timing set has been replaced - Line up marks on # 1 TDC should it be good to go? - Engine is a 3.0 - 210k - Valve job done at 150k.

Thanks
Joe

That is probably the best engine to have that happen on. Non-interference push-rod engine, nothing to break, and all you have to do to fix it is set the marks pointing at each other and go.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll stop at the dealership and get a new key-way and cam bolt. Then when the new timing set is back on I'll run a quick compression check to see that all is ok.
