I just got my 98 ranger so i haven't worked out all the kinks in it yet I found out that the throttel cable on it is longer than it should be an really looks like a cable they would put in a lawn mower...well when i press my clutch in the engine will rev a lot to the point where it sounds like it might blow until i stop then it goes back down...it used to happen just every now and then but it's gotten worse and now it does it all the time...could this be caused by the throttel cable being to long? and if not what could be causing this?

ok i'm still new with the truck maintenance so could you tell me where the idle air control valve is?

I'd check out your throttle linkage and cable also to make sure something isn't sticking. I had a similar, although not so severe, problem and that was my issue.

Another thing that will cause crazy high revs when pushing the clutch in, *or at idle* is a mis-aligned CPS Spindle/sensor. *ask me how I know :(*

What is a spindle sensor? I know a guy who has a 99 model that does this... might be his problem too.

You may also have a vacuum leak causing this- but it would eventually throw a code for lean bank 1 and/or 2. Po171 and/or Po174

The same thing happens to me on my 98! I haven't understood why it did this till now. Mine revs to about 3 grand or 2900 rpms and just stays there till i stop. Thank you whoever posted this and for the answer.
