97 Ranger automatic transmission - problem & swap?

I have a 97 ranger with 2.3 L 4 cylinder, 131k, and an automatic transmission. This is new for me and I have had it for only a few months.

There is a small leak where the drive shaft comes in but it seems to shift okay. Recently the OD light periodically comes on and starts blinking. This comes and goes but may be becoming more frequent. Not sure if tranny fluid has ever been changed. Based on what I have read, the tranny may be on the way out. Any recommendations?

Assuming it is about to go, I have started looking for a replacement...maybe a swap. I found a 97 Ranger Automatic but for a 3.0 l (6 cylinder). Would this fit? They should both be 4r44e but I have read that they still may not be interchangeable. Do I need a 4 cylinder tranny?

Any help or advice would be helpful for this new Ranger owner.
