97 m5r1 shift check issue

Rebuilding a m5r1 and everything shift checks good with the shift rail cover off. As soon as I bolt the cover on i cant turn the input in gear. I did replace the shift forks so the rails were disassembled. I'm going to swap the old forks in tomorrow to see if they make a difference. I did verify the stub shaft and rails are in neutral prior to installing the cover. Any Insight you guys can give would be great

With shift rail cover off can you turn input shaft when "in gear"?

just slide a "dog gear" forward or back like a shift fork would to select "a gear"

If "two" gears are selected transmission will lock, so check Reverse and OD(5th) as well

Yes with shift cover off everything turns good. Reverse has a slight tight spot but not bad. Can turn past it by hand when i shift to reverse and turn input I replaced the shift forks with allstates and I'll try swapping OEM back in.

I would guess that one of the forks is too long/deep and pressing down on dog gear hard enough to hold it in place so output shaft is locked once shift rail cover is bolted down
So would spin in Neutral but not "in gear" when output shaft needs to move

Double check that the sliders/sleeves got installed in the correct direction.

you were right. the shift forks came from allstate gear. i still have to reach out to them but their shift work was about 3/16 taller then the oem one.
