my first time using one of these forums. i have the 5.0 in my 2000 ranger took it for a drive and the transmission didn't know how to shift correctly. My question is does the vss on the 97 5.0 control the transmission shifting and is my ranger vss confusing the computer. the overdrive lite started flashing as well. any help would be greatly appreciated

5.0? Did someone put a v8 in it? Or did you mean 3.0 or 4.0?

The 97 Explorer used the vss from the trans/t-case and the 2000 Ranger used the vss from the rear axle. They run different frequencies, so you will need to wire the t-case vss to the pcm to make it work right. If you put on the transmission wiring harness as part of the swap, then it has the pigtail to the vss - is that plugged in?
