i need help.. i want to swap my 3.slow out for the 4.go. i have a 97 ranger. i need to know if a 4.0 from a 2005 explorer will just bold right in. motor mounts the same location? transmission mounts in the same location? drive shaft differences? i have looked all over the net and cant find any info. im not worried about the electronics. i can handle that.

has any one done this swap or anything around the same years? any info will be helpful :icon_cheers:

Well the engine mounting should be ok. The transmission determines the drive shafts, not the engine. You will need a transmission, but after 1988 all Ranger and Explorer transmissions were the same length.

You will need the trans from the 4.0. As long as you keep the same type of transmission (auto to auto or stick to stick) you can reuse your current driveshaft. If you switch from auto to manual, or vice versa, you'll need a different driveshaft because the auto trans is a different length than the manual trans.

The mounts from an 05 explorer may be different from your older ranger, but you should be able to find mounts that work. You will also need the engine wiring harness and PCM from the 4.0 too.
