I got a '96 2.3L and I'm going to be running it as a yard plow truck. I know I Need a bigger Alternator - Any ideas? Is there anything that is a bolt in? ...or even a simple swap setup? I dont know what the stock alt puts out but I'm thinking it's only about 95amps.

I think a few years of explorer work and are a larger amp rating. There are aftermarket if course but they run kinda steep. you can have yours rebuilt to put out more amperage I believe. I'm looking into the same thing lemme know what you find

Yes,some of the explorers, some f150,s have the same bolt on deal, you might have to rotae the case but no big deal.Junk yard

I'll have to look around for an explorer one or something. Any idea what years? motors?

Checkout the tech library under alternators. Looks like you can use a 130 amp alternator. And you are correct, stock for your truck is 95 amps.

Yeah, I did read throught there as well as doing a search but the years and info in there are is kinda vague. it does say that the alt from an 86 grand marq will work for a 2.3 but doesnt say what year. I'm almost postive it's not a bolt in.

Now that I think of it I actually have one from an Explorer in the garage. Anyway of identifying amperage?

Have you thought about a dual battery setup with isolator?

If the high current draw is only when moving plow blade around then 95 amp alt can keep both batteries charged up when plowing and driving from location to location.

You could also add a battery switch for a "just in case" problem, having two batteries can be a benefit beyond just high current use, it can get you home if there is a problem.

The 4th post in this thread has a picture of the 95 amp and 130 amp explorer alternators side by side

the 130 amp is larger, you can ID it by the mounting bolt hole differences, 95 amp has much longer case between mounting holes because of its smaller size

I have a 94 Ranger 2.3 L & recently replaced the alt with one listed for a 94 Explorer. Rated at 130amps

Don't buy any ebay shit. The best bang for your buck is mechman. They have a 240a for 299 and 270a for 399.
