Im working on this truck for a buddy of mine... its by far the most difficult vehicle to diagnose lol.

Specs: 94 OBD1 ranger with manual transmission 2x4.

The original problem was that it start up in the morning and run good for about 15 mins then loose cylinders 1 and 4, but would still run somewhat... 2 days later, after troubleshooting this problem, I noticed that the coil pack was not getting power on the left side of the coil "cyl 1 and 4" so I knew it HAD to be the ignition driver located on the side of the intake manifold... replaced that and it ran fine... for 5 mins, then it started backfiring and has run terribly, now it wont even start up, just pops and backfires... so the last thing in this equation is the crank position sensor 163$!!! I replaced it and to my misfortune it still wont start..

I am officially out of ideas =( I have also spent the past hour and a half googling this problem and have not found a solution.

also, when it was running on 2 cylinders; I unplugged the MAF sensor just for kicks and nothing happened... hmmmm

Any help would be appreciated.

i'd start by taking off the ignition control module(located on the intake manifold) and having it TESTED at a local parts house.

2nd. been there

unplug the SPOUT connector and see if it runs better

spout connector? not sure what that is, but I just googled it and it appears to be a little gray chip plugged into the harness that takes the computer out of the timing loop?

ill go do that now lol

yes it should be close to the ign. module on the intake

found it, taped to the harness that is next to the plug that goes into the cab...

cranked the engine over but it still acted the same... I took a 10 second video, uploading to youtube now for assistance lol

Did you clean the ground surface behind the DIS ignition module? And smear down dielectric grease?

And when you mean the coil pack wasn't getting power.....you mean to the wires leading up to the coil pack? or the coils just weren't firing?

Check the connectors and wires between the module and coil packs.

There should be a resistance check for the CPS.

there are 3 wires going to the coil pack, the red wire is positive and the 2 outside wires are negative switched by the ICM, the left wire which goes to the left coil was not getting power, the right one was... plus I manually triggered the coil pack on my bench; I assure you it works perfectly.

I grounded the ICM with 3 tested clip cords to the intake manifold which I tested resistance to the battery, .2 ohms, IMO is a good ground.

I checked the wires going to the coil pack from the ICM and they are good.

just verified that the timing belt didnt jump "not likely" but its confirmed in time.

=( fml

looking like its the ICM. go get it tested

will do tomorrow

they can do that at advance autoparts or autozone?

also: I just checked the codes and I got a 116, 116, 111, and a 111

the ECT can go pound some salt, its not getting replaced unless its leaking and wont take JB weld.

removed gargantuan connector from PCM and checked all the wires coming from the ICM and everything checks out...

well...... I probed around all the wires, checked grey/ red stripe from the coolant temp sensor, MAP sensor and TPS to the computer and didnt get a reading... however it only threw a code for ECT sensor... however after probing the harness itself it all checked out, plugged it back into the computer harness and everything reads what it should be... im thinking it was a bad connector... however those connectors dont strike me as something that would go bad.... gold plated connectors with silicone and rubber seals..

hmmmmmm its bedtime tho, tomorrow is another day...

not throwing any ignition system codes. usually it will if the ignition is causing the havoc. Still have the ICM tested (it's free) then i'd have a look at fuel pressure numbers. And you're sure the timing belt didn't jump a tooth?
