I'm looking into doing the 130a switch, and I'm finding part numbers for the 4.0 Explorer are different depending on which model of 4.0 engine came in the explorer.

I've read that 96-98 Explorers are what you want to use as a direct drop in replacement, but the 97 and 98 have 4.0L OHV and 4.0L SOHC as options and the alternators for each are different part numbers.

Which one do I choose?

Or, should I just stick with the 96 explorer 4.0 and call it a day? I didn’t see two engine options for the 96.

btw, I have a '94 4.0 XLT Ranger

I've never done this swap... but your 94 has the OHV engine.

I pretty sure you want the part from the explorer OHV engine.

The SOHC will use the "pancake" alternator and won't fit an OHV engine. I know you already figured it out but that's the difference.

thanks holyford, I appreciate the explanation. Always good to have an understanding to go along with the answer. :-)

Id go with the 130amp (vs. the 95 amp), in case you decide to run some accessories later. More importantly get a good brand. My Bosch lasted 300 miles. I've seen buddies get store brands that were DOA.

I went with a Bosch 130. I just cant find my alternator bracket now.:ROFLMAO:o_O

Keep the receipt. I got the same Bosch last summer off Rock Auto, it lasted 300 miles and burned out. I put my old motorcraft 95amp back on, it still works.
