94 Explorer Starting Issue

Having a bit of an electrical issue with my 94 Explorer XLT. Went to leave a friend's house two mornings ago, and no start when I turn the key...

4.0 M5OD 4x4

So far I believe I have eliminated solenoid, battery, and starter issues. I can jump the solenoid with a screwdriver to get her to fire up, and I can jump to the top post of the solenoid from the positive terminal on my battery and she'll fire up.

That leaves me a bit stumped... Any one have a wiring diagram clutch safety switch, and the ignition?

I'll give the search bar a shot in the meantime.

In 93 (Ranger) the clutch switch wires for the starter solenoid coil were Red with a light blue stripe (R/LB) and PK (pink). Short those two wires at the clutch switch connector and see if it cranks!

I noticed that when I was checking around with my multi meter. What might the four other wires be though? lol

Today I got at my starting problem again, and jumped the wires for the clutch switch, but still no dice... That would leave me thinking that the problem is in the wiring between the ignition cylinder and relay under the hood...? Any ideas?

Wiggle the small guage wire on the starter. When I had my 94 that would work loose every once in a while, maybe yours is doing the same.

It starts with no problem if I jump the solenoid, or run a jumper from the battery to the post on the solenoid. I'm fairly certain that my wiring is good between those two components.

Ok then......get a test light. See if the small wire that fits over the post on the solenoid under the hood is getting power from the ignition switch. You may have a bad ignition switch or broken wire between the ign. switch and the under hood solenoid.

Got the truck to start with the key again.

I ended up going under the dash and finding this...

It had strange plug on it...

Proceeded to remove from the middle of the red/lt blue wire.

Spliced up, and she runs.

I remember those "anti-theft" devices. They are good when they work correctly but can be a pain (as you found out) when it fails.

That's what my neighbor and I had guessed the device was upon removal. I never knew it was there in the last 2 and half years lol
