93 ranger auto locking hubs reinstalling problem

I just did my inner and outer front axle u-joints and I'm having a problem reinstalling the auto locking hub onto the spindle shafts. I can get it to go on to the shafts but as soon as I release the pressure from my hand the auto locking hub pops off the shaft. Is there a special way to install these auto locking hubs ? I had no problems removing them with my hand.

The cover is held in place by the wheel lugs, or "clips" on one or two of the lug studs

Not sure what else is "popping off" from the description

One heads up, keep wheel grease at a minimum, just lightly oil the "auto hub" section, it needs to move freely to work well, thicker grease prevents that

I can't get the automatic cam back on to the shaft. Maybe I don't have the wheel bearing nut tight enough ?? I need to get my truck back on the road today.

So you can't get the C-clip back on the axle to hold cam in place?

Wheel bearing is tightened the usual way, like almost all wheel bearings, spin the hub as you tighten the nut when its tight back it off an 1/8 of a turn, then lock it
You want it to spin free but not wobble
