92 ranger 1354 tcase fluid

So I pulled the transmission today and whenni separated the trade it immediately poured out oil.

So the question is how bad as that or is it ok? Is it fine or do I need to split it and clean it out?

I'm assuming you have an automatic transmission, if so that is completely normal. If you have a manual transmission it's not normal but don't think I would worry about it too much, just make sure both the trans and engine are topped off with Mercon ATF (all transmissions and the transfer cases were designed to use it other than the old TK and such, but in a '92 all took Mercon) and put some RTV between the trans and T case to keep that in...

Careful there Scott. 92 was the last year for the 2.9 and the FM transmissions. The FMs used gear oil. I have found they tend to go boom when you give them ATF instead. Any of the other engines that year would have an M5OD, and a 2.9 could have one, but in a 4x4 it would be rare.

It's the 4.0 with a manual trans and transfer case. I'm rebuilding the m5od now so it won't be to much trouble to open it up and clean out the oil.

I dont want to risk it as I'll be driving to San Antonio for work this summer and want to wheel it at least once while I'm down there

M5OD and 1354 use the same fluid, so there's that at least.

I know this was just a typo, but just in case somebody reads this later and gets confused...

Top off the transmission and -transfer case- with ATF. The engine really doesn't need it.

Yeah, I don't know much about things before the M5OD, which in my world is '88, those 2.9L rigs mix things up a lot... I knew the TK and FM were different and they could come up through '92 but hey...

I'm with adsm... both have the same fluid, so not a big deal, not sure which it came from but probably the trans, if you change the output seal you should be fine. It won't hurt anything to have some fluid between the two...

If both are topped off with fluid, do what you want, neither will care much...
