So one of the things that bugs me the most about my Ranger is the stock stereo. I mean, it's nice, but I retired all of my cassette tapes years ago when I was but a wee child of 4 years. Also, the speakers leave something to be desired in terms of bass. As in, anything is better than nothing.

I'm also horribly cheap, as I only paid $200 for the thing I don't want to deck it out too much because some day it'll probably light on fire or get abducted by aliens. (They won't take me, just the truck. I figure it's because I'm not as sophisticated.)

Anyway, I'm wondering if you guys had any suggestions/tips on replacing the stock stereo and speakers in an 88. I don't need a very fancy deck, just something that can play mp3 CD's, and speakers that will at least give me a boost in base up to about... normal for a newer vehicle. I'll decide later if I want to make a subwoofer/amp combo box since it's a supercab.

sony has a kit with 4 speakers, and a hu for like 80 bucks. might be a good place to start..........cant believe i just said use sony.........

to each his own, obviously he is not quite an audiophile yet (no harm no foul there, just saying)... so you don't have the need to go with a focal set up...

sony should be fine, try and check out the 4pack with HU that 4x4 mentioned.

When I had my 88 single cab (about ten years ago), I was looking for the same thing you are now. I put some Wal-Mart Pioneer speakers in the doors, a cheap Wal-Mart Pioneer deck in the dash, and bought a set of used 8" Thump (yes, Thump) subs in split truck boxes from a friend, and a cheap 200 watt amp with all the wiring from another friend. I think all said and done, for everything, it cost me around $250. Didn't sound too bad either considering the amount of money invested. With the 8's I could still put my seat all the way back and in the truck, they sounded great, outside the truck they sounded like I had 6x9's at most.

i get decent sound from a set of Sansui 4" speakers i put in the original dash locations. cheap on ebay, but brand new in the box. got my pioneer hu there as well. barely used, works fine, and has the weather band. about $60 for all of it including shipping. does all i need it to for now.

If you want to stay on the inexpensive side...

Sony Xplod audio is probably the best cheap stuff you can get.

If you are willing to lay more money down...

Alpine has been known to have the deepest bass for entry level speakers

I'd use ebay or sonicelectronix to buy the speakers for Alpine but use the build a system feature to clue in on what you want.
