I have a 1987 Ranger with a A4LD. I've been doing a lot of engine work and got it humming great. I have noticed it sometimes downshifts hard. More so with OD. I have seen it a couple of times when slowing down at a stop light and it goes green I punch it and it will clunk or clang just the once and it shifts ok getting up to speed. Sometimes it downshifts hard in the other gears more so from 2nd to 1st. At a stand still I have heard it clang or clunk shifting it from drive to reverse. A couple of times. I have just changed the fluid in the pan and filter. Just the usual grey sand. No metal pieces. Fluid red and it did need changing. I also noticed that it had too much fluid on the dipstick. Something done at an earlier date. No leaks. I don't know my way around a transmission and don't have a lift but I can do some crawling. My age hinders too much in depth work underneath. I don't believe this year model has an MAF. Also, when I add fluid how much do I need to add? It has the factory transmission cooler and I suppose the TC holds some fluid as well. Thanks.
