Ok, I picked up a 1985 ranger 4x4 with a 2.8 and a 5 speed manual trans.
The guy we got it from had just put in a new clutch, but had lost the drive shafts and a few other parts. I had to remove the trans so I could replace the o ring in the slave cylinder so I was able to verify that a new clutch was installed. Now when you put in 1st or 2nd it just kind of free wheels(no resistance). 3rd 4th 5th and rev seem fine. I removed the shifter several times to make surer the shifter ball is in the socket. Anybody have any ideas? Would seem odd that the PO would install a new clutch if the trans was bad.
