I have a 1985 4x4 ranger with 2.8 manual trans and im looking to convert to a 2.3T or 2.3 EFI.

I've done a fair amount of home work and im starting to compile a parts list. Ill start with what I've found, any verification of this info or additional info would be great.

So my fm-145 5 speed has to go because the Lima 4cylinder has a different bell house bolt pattern.

I looks like I will need a 2wd 4cyl M5OD and a V6 4wd M5OD Tail house and main shaft.

the Unknown is what transfer case to use that will be compatible with my current drive shafts and the hybrid M5OD?? :dunno:

next I will need a fuel tank pump and lines from a 4cyl EFI as I have mechanical fuel pump on the 2.8? :dunno:

Engine mounts are from a 2.3 ranger are needed

I will need a cross member that is compatible with new trans/transfer case combo? :dunno:

obviously wire harness/ecu and ect. from donor vehicle.

I have a pretty good welder and a cut off saw so exhaust wont be an issue.. :icon_welder:

2.8 radiator should be ok or the same as 2.3? :dunno:

other than that I cant think of any other questions.. feel free to leave input on anything with a ? behind it or anything I missed..

im not interested in 302 or 4.0 swap see please don't suggest I abandon my plans and drop v8 power in and be done lol.

promise to make this an awesome build thread with lots of pictures :icon_thumby:

I'd just keep the transfer case you have. The M5OD will change the length though and require a shorter rear shaft and longer front shaft. Both of which are available in salvage yards. (NOTE: The current front driveshaft is the one you want if you swap to a DANA 35 TTB.)

There is an M5OD for the 4x4 2.3 if you can find one. They are "RARE".

That sounds about right on the fuel pump and tank. I'd go ahead and get the single in-tank setup for simplicity. But, you'd have to change the gauge resistor on the sending unit.

I honestly have no idea about the cross-member. If it needs changing it'd be a great time to loose the bushing'd one if that's what you have.
