Hi, I have a 1983 ranger with the carb'd 2.3L it is really hard to start when the engine is cold but once it gets started it idles like a champ. However the problem is when I shift and hit the gas pedal the engine sputters and acts like it wants to stall until the RPM's catch back up and it drives fine. So my two problems are cold starting and stuttering and falling on its face when I give it gas under load.

I first thought it was the timing, but I pulled the timing cover off and the timing marks all line up and the distributor it lined up with the number one cylinder. So now I'm thinking that its that the carb is clogged up and is starving the engine for fuel under power. What do you guys think? I tried searching but couldn't come up with anything.

Thanks.

Alittle back story this is not my DD my DD is a 97' F150, I bought this as a beach rat. It's 4x4 and the 4wheel drive works perfect and the engine sounds good when its idling. I know I can fix that problem, I just need to get the engine reliable enough to take to the beach 2 hours away and not be worried about being stranded half way home.

accelerater pump

sounds like its went bad, with the motor OFF open the choke butterfly look down the carbs throat and pump the throttle:icon_welder: you should see a stream of raw fuel squirting into the throat if there is none or stream is weak or intermittent then the diaphragm on it is bad or a clogged passage.IMHO

No value eh?

I take my input didn't apply :icon_rofl:

Yeah, I checked it and it was a nice solid stream. Took the carb off and rebuilt it. Still nothing, thinking it's ignition.

Cold starting...get a block heater...mine would not start if the temp was below freezing...added a block heater last December and it starts up pretty much first or second crank...but I have to use the block heater for about an hour...haven't tried it in a lesser time but that seems to be the magic number...60 minutes of baking before start...and starts most times with no choke...

Dying under load...check the base for vacuum leaks. When I first put mine back together it would start fine (warm weather) but it would die as soon as I tried to rev it...had a friend take the carb apart and clean it up...same...

Turned out to be a leak along the carb/intake surface...removed the carb and sealed it with high heat gasket goop and it has worked fine ever since...

vacumn advance

Does your dis have this if so take off the cap and suck on the the hose if the diaphragm is good when vacuum is applied it should move.If it does move get some carb cleaner "LEAKS" and with it running spray on gaskets and vacuum lines to see if r.p.m's increase if all this fails or do this first try adjusting the timing with the distributor.Blip the throttle after you adjust timing and see if throttle response is better. :icon_confused: Check throttle shaft play in carb body if its sloppy probably a vacuum leak there.Toy with your float level also.
