Well fellas, I have a 8.8 L/S out of a old fox body. I already have the position rebuild kit and some a set of 3.73 gears to install as well. Now my problem, due to our economy sucking I am having a difficult time getting the money together to pay my mechanic to do the job. I literally have everything I need to do it. And I have all the basic tools required to get the job done however, how hard is it to set up the gears and rebuild the posi. I have a good general mechanical knowledge but I am not sure how hard it is going to be to set up the gears and get the correct back- lash for the gears. Any thoughts or suggestions?

setting gears properly requires some special tools (dial indicator to measure backlash, micrometers to measure shims) and some know how on reading gear mesh patterns and alot of patience. Its not really something that you want to try and do without thoroughly researching how to properly do it because improperly set gears will cause you a headache in no time. Do you have any buddies that know how to do it that can help you out?

Just swapping the carrier can usually be done without any adjustments needing to be made to the gear pattern.

As for replacing the clutch packs in the trac-loc, the hardest part is getting the S spring back in. I usually just get it somewhat started in there and give it a smack with a hammer to get it in the rest of the way.
