I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, When it comes time to rebuild my 5r55e I would prefer to stay with it but get it rebuilt stronger , maybe shift kit and generally build a stronger tranny.
Is this something that is practical or should I think about a different trans.

My truck is 2000 4.0 xlt ext cab. stock 3:73 and tows 2 atv's maybe 1500#w/trailer.
I really like this truck and probably going to make it a little more trail worthy as money comes available ie: small lift etc.
what do ya'll think ?:icon_confused:

Also, I live in Colorado and nothing is flat.

I just changed the ATF on mine, it's not a terrible transmission, but it is pretty derpy. I would suggest putting in a manual but your would have to compare the cost of rebuilding vs putting a manual in.

These transmissions are not by any means meant for pulling tree trunks from the ground, but for a daily driven truck with light hauling use they do ok. That being I said my truck has the little brother 4R44E which functions essentially the same and I just did a total rebuild and I paid 130.00 for a overhaul kit including plates and seals/gaskets and filter, 100.00 for a remanufactured converter and 200.00 for a rebuilt valve body (mine was shot) that had a TransGo shit improver already installed. Plus about 40.00 for all new fluid so for about 470.00 I have a completely rebuilt functioning transmission vs. 1200.00 the local transmission shop wanted to charge me. Money well spent if I do say so myself! Also check out Sonnex transmission they have a lot of useful info and fixes for these transmissions! Whatever you do I strongly suggest if rebuilding your transmission to install the TransGo kit it may not feel like a huge change but it is definitely helping with the longevity of your unit.

At this point the transmission is doing fine , however I just turned 160k and I'm the third owner with no past paperwork. I can only assume it"s the original.
I really like an auto for offroad ..way more practical and easy on the clutch leg.
If this IS the the original trans I'm impressed and will just get it it rebuilt with a mild shift kit and call it good. I'm not hard on the truck but not afraid to use it either.
Thanks for your input.. I'll wait and see what others have to say.
