4wd high back to 2wd problem?

So I got another question about this truck I have. I got it to go into 4wd high and am trying to get it back to 2wd to save gas when the roads aren't so bad. The 4wd light has always been on since I had to replace the clutch, and now i can lock the hubs on the front (no rear locking hubs) to get it in and out of 4wd high. This made me think that the transfer case is always in 4wd high and I just never locked the hubs until recently. So my question is, could there be a problem with the shifter motor on the transfer case or is it possibly something else? You folks have been great with help to my ignorant questions so far, and would like to have some of your input on this one. The truck is stock as far as I can tell so I think it has everything they came out with way back in 1983, although sometimes I find that some of the parts are only from an 84 ranger. Weird if ya ask me, but it is what it is.

Well if this is an 83 I assume it has a manual shift transfer case.

Make sure the likeages are all in the right spot, if they are you have an electrical issue.

Get a long zip-tie and put it on your front drive shaft. Drive around a bit and see if you hear the thwap.

I know the front drive shaft is spinning cause i can feel it in the floorboard. And yes, it's a manual system. I just don't know what the proper hook-ups or positions are for the linkage. any pdf's or guides for that? That is if that's the issue. I have run into a few electrical things in this truck, like the speedo light only works when it wants to and the stereo has some kind of link to the gas pedal every once and a while cause it makes noise through the speakers when the rpms are just right.

Also I am not sure if I know the shifting in and out of 2 high to 4 high is properly executed. The shifter arm is all the way to the front and the 4wd light is on in the dash, where it should be in 2wd high, but if I move it to the spot I think the 4wd high is supposed to be, it acts like it's in neutral.

Alright. just read the Chilton's manual for transfer case adustments and I think the cam plate is a bit out of whack. I will try that first and let y'all know what happens.

Yes, I sometimes have my own answers to things, it just takes me the time to type and think while researching to come up with answers.

Thank the ranger gods for the wisdom to post.

I will let you all know if this solves my issue.

I've had trouble with this too. It's good you looked up the adjustment that's where you nee to start.Mine is adjusted so that I can move the lever as far forward as possible and that barely gets it out.If you want to be sure if it's out just reach down there and turn the drive shaft by hand if the hubs are out and in 2 hi it turns.
