hey there
i just lost my 4r44e trans (r.i.p.) on my 98 ranger 3.0l 4x4
now does anyone know what different transmissions fit and what is required to get them to work right.
i wanted to go to the 5 speed but people keep telling me it's more trouble than it's worth, is it? help please

im pretty sure your stuck with a 4R44E if you want to keep an Automatic. as far as swapping in a 5spd, if your going to do that much work you might as well put a 4.0 or 5.0 in while your at it.

There are tons of threads on here of people swapping to a MT. Look around and gauge if it's "too much work." I have not done it personally (I purchased correctly the first time ;)) but I've done just about everything you need to do to swap in a MT and I'd think it'd be worth it for the reliability alone. It's far less work than swapping an engine just for the fact you're not dealing with very much in the way of electrical.
