Hello Gentlemen!

I am in need of some information/advise. I bought a 95 4.0 ranger 4x4 a couple months back, everything was solid except the transmission (big surprise i know). SO last weekend my brother and I swapped out the transmission for a different one.

When i bought the truck it had a 4r44e in it, I found a replacement 5r55e that would bolt right up. Both my brother and I researched the compatibility of the swap and everything looked good. fast forward a couple days, the swap is done and trans seems to have a dual personality. sometimes it will slip as it goes from 2-->3 and then when i'm going about 50mph it will jump back and forth from what i assume is 4th-->OD, making it SUPER annoying! But then i will get a couple days where the shifts are solid all the way through each gear, but there is no OD. The shifts are harder, but not something i'm not willing to live with. The Flashing OD light on the dash has come and gone here and there. I honestly look forward to seeing it, because i know i will be getting the non-slipping, no OD personality from the trans.

I would prefer to have the no OD and non-slipping trans rather than the slip and slide one i drove to work.

What are your thoughts?

Since your truck has a 4.0, I believe the trans would have been a 4R55e,

and you replaced with a 5R55e.

These are computer controled, so your computer may be sended the 4R

commands to the 5R trans.

Yeah, you need the right computer for your now wrong computer controlled trans man.

hmmm, I guess I'm headed to the bone yard next weekend. Does anyone have a link or some info on where the computer is located and how to swap it out?

Thank you for the quick responses, I appreciate the help guys!

shameless bump!

ooks like i have a dry weekend coming up and would like to hit the bone yard and pick up a tranny computer.

I believe the tranny computer is the same as the motor computer. You need to find a pcm [powertrain control module] aka; ecm, etc. On the vehicles I've worked on [up to 91], it is behind the passenger side kick panel. Also, you want to look for a donor vehicle that's as close as possible to the one your running now, so same motor, options, and trans.
Good luck,

Richard

I think you need to read this:

I don't think you need a different PCM either.
Well, let me qualify that...I don't think a different PCM will fix either of your symptoms.

The only thing that occurs with your swap is that your computer runs that transmission as a 4 speed, not 5. So you lack the extra gear that was electronically added (actually not a gear, per se) by applying the torque converter lockup, making an artificial second gear.

You can do a search on here and will find some good discussions on this swap.

Personally, I think you'd be better off reading up on the 5R55E problems over on that site, and fixing what you've got (sounds like a bad valve body or its seperater gasket to me).

^^^ Good links! Thanks.
I didn't have time to read all of all the threads but I think you'll find what you need there.

Richard
