4:10’s swapped to 3:73’s?

I drive about 30 miles to my new job. Is it worth swapping the gears in my Ranger to something more economical?

It’s an 07 with the 4.0, 4x4, limited slip in the rear and the tires, which are the stock size, are 235/75r15’s.

Thanks

It's a major expense to change ratios because you'll need to change both front and rear. Taller tires would get you the same result- fewer revolutions per mile- cheaper and easier. 265/75r15's maybe, or 245/75r16 if you buy wheels, too. I had an 04 with 4.10's and 245/75r16's and my current 11 with 3.73's and 235/75r15's runs the same rpm/mph due to the shorter tires. In my opinion the trucks look better with 16" wheels and tires.

Keep in mind when shopping for tires, a lot of manufacturers list the tire weight, and in your case it would be worth paying attention to. Going with larger tires usually means heavier tires which will fight you in the quest for better MPG. It may depend on what style of tires you like to run. Mud Terrains will get quite a bit heavier when going up in size, but with normal passenger car/light truck tires the weight difference may be very minor.

I agree with Bird76Mojo.For info I like to use Tire Rack for tire info ( weight/diameter/revolutions ), over the years this has been great for fine tuning final drive ratios to application.

I had 31’s on that truck. I like the ride of the smaller tires, better.
