Hi all, this is an amazing forum! Im looking at buying a 92 ranger stx with the 4.0 ohv. The seller says the timing "needs to be reset" I asked him how he knows this and his response was: "Do you know how the timing is off? Yes, I was working with a dumb mechanic replacing the throttle body and air intake manifold with higher performance parts to squeeze so more performance out of it and he hooked up the sensor to a intake that wasn't even in the system and cranked it which caused it to jump a couple of teeth." Does this make any sense to anyone? Doesn't seem possible to me. Does anyone have any ideas what else could have gone wrong during his, uh, experiment? Thanks.

Does it start and drive? Or not running at all

I haven't even seen it yet. The guy just texted me this:

So with the 3 teeth advance what it does is it cranks and fires but on every other rotation it misses two

cylinders which keeps it from actually turning over. It may very well turn over if you were to put 93 octane gasoline in it and also hook it up to jumper

cables but driving it in that running condition is not fun and is bad for the engine. The parts kit is a bit under 100.00.

Mhmm interesting. Because I think on my ohv it skipped one or two teeth and mines mis firing and running rough

Yeah, seems odd to me. I dont think his diagnosis is right. Im guessing its something else that he screwed up while playing with the throttle body and intake somehow.

It sounds to me like he took a bunch of words that he know mean thing about cars and proceeded to use none of them correctly.

LOL, adsm08

Having a 1994 Ranger 4.0l OHV I can safely say nothing you can do at the top of the engine will cause timing chain to skip ANY teeth, i.e. throttle body and air intake manifold work

Seller could be a Moron, selling a Ranger would make that likely :), or he could be hiding larger issues with double talk.

I would think the later because selling a 1992 Ranger that needs a new engine that you can't afford would take away a little of the "you have to be a moron to sell a Ford Ranger"

So unless you can drive this 1992 Ranger pass on buying it, if it only costs $100 to fix then he would fix it to sell it for more.
Its a "Mechanics Special", broken and needs work, so 1/2 price if that, since cost to repair is open ended, an unknown

Yea, seller and "mechanic" sound like a couple boneheads. If it was cheap enough, I'd think about buying it figuring that worst case I'll put another motor in.

Or Transmission

Had a friend who bought a car and the seller had disabled the engine on purpose so it "looked like" a simple fix, he was hiding the fact of a bad automatic trans, and of course it was sold "AS IS" because it didn't run

Caveat emptor-the principle that the buyer alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase is made.
