Back in the day, when I bought my first '92 Ranger new, the dealer had to replace the rear main seal in the 4.0 OHV V6 three times until it stopped leaking.

Now, I have newly acquired, used '92 Ranger and it too has a leaking rear main seal. I have having the transmission replaced and figured it is a good time to try and fix the rear main as well.

I wonder if there is any improved rear main product out there for the 4.0 OHV, or at least some advice on how to install a factory one to avoid the leaking?

get a crankshaft repair sleeve and the proper tool to install the seal..

That is just the installation tool correct?

Ford offers a repair kit that comes with a sleeve and a seal (p/n F5TZ-6701-A), but it costs about $50 at the dealership. Rebuilders should definitely install a sleeve over the factory seal surface, but there are better alternatives in the aftermarket; Micro Sleeve (800-475-3383) and Classic (800-393-0544) both offer sleeves for the 4.0L cranks (from TRS Tech pages).
