i have a seen some 2wd rangers out on the site that are pimped out for off roading. do you guys actually off road with them or is it for looks. i would love to ramble with my ranger but i thought since it was 2wd i couldn't. what do i need to do to be able to off road without selling my truck and getting a 4x4.

thanks

I off road my 2wd 08 ranger sport. Just gotta be more careful through mud and stuff. Do you have the 3.73 rear or 4.10 limited?

i think 3.73. what did you do so you could ramble? do you slide out all the time or get stuck often?

locker, lift, and decent tires is about all you can do. it'll never perform like a 4x4 for obvious reasons, and the lack of low range hurts in many situations...but in the hands of a skilled driver, a decently modified 2wd can perform acceptably offroad.

It alos depends what kind of off-roading you're doing. I took my 92 out just about every week it was a 3.0 2wd in stock form. Just for the record, it was built ford tough. lol. hard to get stuck when you're doing 60 mph through the desert. But if you plan on crawling up some gnarly stuff you're S.O.L. with 2wd.

I had mismatched gear ratios in the diffs in my 4x4 over the summer.

I wheeled some gnarley CO shit in 2 wheel drive high range with 3.73s and a trac loc.

It can be done, but it's tough.

On slick stuff with an open diff you can use the brakes to keep both tires turning before you get the one wheel peel.

I'd suggest a locker and winch if you're serious about wheelin. Or go long travel and take it to the sand

my buddy had an 86 longbed 2wd that we built coil spacers and add a leafs on the rear with a 2 inch bodylift to run 33s. this thing ripped as a rallyracer and hillclimber but if your looking to go muddin then even a locker won't help much unless you hit it at like 60 (way fun till you sink!)
