Alright so right now I have a 97 ranger with the 2.3l and the Mazda M50D-R1 5-Speed transmission. Im looking to swap this transmission for a different one that will bolt up to the 2.3l or find the right junkyard parts to turn this one into a 4x4 capable transmission.

Any help would be greatly appriciated

take a 3.0 4x4 trans to your favorite trans guy and have em make the 2.3 4x4 with it.

unless you can do it your self...but i am guessing you would not have asked if you regularly build transmissions...

100-300 around here for a 4x4 3.0 trans, and usually 100-300 for someone to bearing kit it on the bench....if it dont need any bearings...its usually 250 or so for a mid grade kit

so 600 is the high side around here with just a guts swap...850 freshened up....

find out what kind of pizza and beer the local trans guy likes and send a few pizzas and cases of beer first for the best deals...

Im pretty much for doing all my own work.. I have rebuilt some transmissions I just havent ever tried to swap something into something else that it doesnt belong in. So what has to be changed? Just the bolt pattern on the bellhousing?

there can be some differences, generally if you go year for year there wont be issues. so if you have a 99...get a 99 donor, then consider a rebuild kit and get it done.

so, yes....for the most part you are simply putting the 4x4 internals from the 3.0 into the 2.3 case with the 4x4 extension housing.

the 4.0 can have different ratios and through the years there are such changes so if you go complete you should not have any issues.
