Alright, :icon_confused:I have access to a 289 and c4 tranny out of a fairlane or falcon? from my brother in law for $300.00. Should I go with that or try to find a 302 and tranny somewhere else? I've heard a 289 is wide and makes for a hard swap. I have a 2.8 now 4x4 stock. And my stock radiator is leaking at a seam, so I was thinking of getting a (V8)3 core radiator now since I plan on doing the swap anyway, so what is the best radiator to look at far as hoses lining up? Also, I'm thinking of trying to get some 16 or 17's off a newer exploder or sport track at a JY, what would be the best size to torque, gas mileage, and fit for a 83 ranger? I want to get some mudders, but nothing to extreme as this truck is going to be a DD:headbang: Any help would be appreciated:icon_thumby:!

I think you are mixing up a 289 with a 351w.
I believe its the same as a 302 block but dont take my word for it.

yeah, they're the same block for sure. i'm partial to carbs over fi, but that's just me. as for the radiator, i'd just get one for a 302 and that should cool plenty. there are lots of them at the jy and hopefully not to spendy. you could go to Summit Racing on the web and check out the sizes of the radiators they have for comparison. good luck!

what year is the 289? very, VERY early 289s (or was it just the 260/221 V8s) had a different bell housing pattern which is not compatable with later trannies.

I'm not sure on the year, but I 'll find out and post later. So a 289 should go in pretty easy? What about the tire issues? Any thoughts?

Found out. it's a 64 out of a Galaxy with original 62K miles.

Yep, basically the same block with the 289/302, some minor differences. If you want do mudding, I'd go with the 302/5.0 for the more torque. Just saw it's out of a '64' so it would probably (should) have the five bolt bell housing. The good news is that they are hard to find any more and a lot of people on Mustang sites would really like to have one, especially with the low mileage.

The 302 block has longer piston skirts than a 289 block for the longer stroke, otherwise they are pretty much the same and are interchangable with the early 302.

It was right in there they went with different bellhousing that would greatly, greatly complicate the swap. Check to make sure what it is for sure, it might not be original to the car.
