24 Hours Of LeMons & I've got a crazy idea if anybody's up for it...

Just remember before it's made too awesome that the race promoters reserve the right to purchase it for $500 from the team, additionally, the audience (or was it other teams?) can vote it to be destroyed before you can even finish the race.

17" Mustang take off wheels would be pretty good, could wrap them in 245/45R17 tires for good handling and grip (and neither would count toward the $500)

Another option instead of swapping an 8.8 in would be to just put in a spool or weld the 7.5 diff to save some green.

It's the race promotors who can claim it and other teams can vote for the People's Curse.

I'd go with the wheels. The wheels & tires are considared a safety item, and thus, do not count towards the $500 cap. The tires must be street legal and have a treadware rating of 200 or better.

I'd just be happy with an 8.8 limited slip. The spool would chew up tires too fast.

So scrap the 98+ Ranger years. Unless we can get a one for under $500. The older, the cheaper. I would say that the 95 is about as old as you want since the 2.3L CR was increased and gave the engine a 12HP boost. Maybe even a salvaged junkyard Ranger could fit the bill. Screw the tailgate and bed floor. Reinforce the frame, fuel cell between the frame, cut the exhuast off, and do what others have suggested for freebies (port-n-polish).

This is starting to be a fun idea.

A salvaged Ranger would be perfect. It doesn't have to be registered or remotely close to street-legal.

We'd need a Cherry Bomb or something. There's a 92 dB noise limit at the track.

Maybe we could go with a "shrunken semi" theme and put a Mack bulldog on the hood and have the exhaust come out from behind the cab.

And to think I got this wild idea at 10 PM last night while blasting up the I-495. I think I've created a monster outta you guys!

Maybe we could get 3 or 4 Ranger teams together at this rate. Have the "Lone Ranger" (with a mask on the front end)" the "Forrest Ranger," (painted green with trees in the bed), the "Airborne Ranger" (painted camo and with a dedication to the troops), and the "Walker Texas Ranger, (painted with a Texas flag and a couple of bootprints that look like Chuck Norris kicked it!).

What have I done?

You could also cut out portions of the inner bed sides, just leaving enough to support the outer bed sides.

Remove the rear bumper.

Put the air intake tube through the headlight opening with just enough of a filter to keep birds out of the engine (only has to last 24 hours, right?).

Actually, they break it up into two sessions on Saturday & Sunday. Yesterday, they on track from 11 AM to 10 pm. Today they ran from noon - 5 PM.

what you need is an old rot box thats got a 2.3t

damn im liking this!!
in fact i want another 2wd to build a race truck lol

If you can get the time off & a visa, I'd love to have you on the team!

We'll show 'em that a Ranger is more than just a truck. It's the embodyment pf passionate "nuts" like you & me that REALLY make a common vehicle shine!

i would be honored :icon_thumby:
but that would be a really, really long shot lol

It's a shame I'm not close enough to get in on this, but I'm really anxious to see how it turns out. I think it's a great idea.

For the florida guys, there is one down in west palm beach on new years. I'm game if a couple of others are.

If I lived closer I would love to do this. Anyone have a free 5.0 plus transmission, drive shaft and 9" laying around?

I've thought about doing this a couple of times now, but never really went at it.

I missed the cut off for this years race in Detroit, but it would give me a chance to make sure the truck is fully prepped for next years race...

Hmm...my buddies did mention wanting to get into this as well...need to find a cheap Ranger and an old T-bird...anybody want to buy some parts? :icon_twisted:
