2005 Ford Ranger XLT 4v4(120k miles) Transmission or Timing belt problem?? Or?

problem Just purchased a 2005 ford ranger colt fx4 120k miles. We test drove it twice for 30 minutes each, downhill, steering, brakes, slip rear, etc. the truck was perfect so I bough it. I drove it home in the freeway and it just died on me. Don’t know much about trucks need advice. Timing belt? Ignition? Motor completely screwed? Any help appreciated. Dont know much about trucks.

Cranking almost sounds like it has no compression but it's a 4.0 SOHC so that's nearly impossible since it doesnt use a timing belt but 2 separate timing chains.

Shoot starting fluid in it and see if it attempts to fire. If it does you know it's a fuel issue and can move on from there. If it still does nothing it's a spark or compression/timing issue.

I'd recommend checking to see if it has the three things it needs to fire. Air, spark, fuel. As said above thats the best way to determine all three in one go.

1. Fuel pump inertia switch. Hit the reset button. Cost: Free. If it's like my Explorer, it's either behind the passenger side kick panel or the firewall behind the glove box. My son would accidentally kick it with his size 13's and kill the motor while I was driving down the road.

2. Fuel filter.

Johnny O's first rule of vehicle repair: If you're not sure what the problem is, start with the cheapest fix first.

Not sure what a Ranger Colt is but if you watch the tach while cranking it over you should see a little movement if it's getting spark. There is no timing belt to worry about and 120k is too early for timing chain problems unless it's been neglected or rode hard and put away wet.
