I have a 2003 ranger that has the rear brakes locking at slower speeds. It appears to be the drivers side that locks. I pulled the drums yesterday. I checked for any leaking fluids (brake fluid or differential oil) and didn't find any. The left drum was much more difficult to remove than the right and it looks like the groove from the shoes is deeper on that side. Other than more brake dust, I don't see any other differences between the left and right side.

I also don't see any rust or problems with the parking brake linkage and the parking brake does not get used very often. What else is worth checking? Is a complete rear brake job in order?

i have asked this question b4 and never got a anwser but i have been having the same problem for about 2 months and cant figure it out

Just doesn't seem logical that only one side would lockup. I've had seven '98'and newer Rangers and never noticed the problem., all low mileage. Maybe a wheel cylinder hanging up? Do both the shoes appear to have the same wear on the bad side? If you jack up the rear end, can you feel the shoes dragging? Really just throwing out some questions.

Not using the parking brake can lead to the cables seizing, in my experience. You need to isolate the e-brake cable from the rest of the brake system and physically check for smooth operation of the cable inside the liner. It can be a pain, and only do one side at a time, so you have a reference to put it back together. A manual helps. if this is your problem, you should see increased gas mileage after the fix. Please don't work on this if you don't have at least some mechanical experience.

if it pulls to one side or another to inspect the diferential
change the rear wheel cylinder---» lining or shoes brake guy ----» adjust the distance for the brake
