2003 FX4 tranny problem, are the MA and HB the same transmissions.

I just bought a 2003 fx4 4x4 4lt with a manual transmission. The input bearing in it is shot and has quite a bit of play. As well there is a lot metal in the oil. Is the same transmisson in all the different rangers that are 4x4 manual 4ltr from 2001 up to current. It looks like it will be way cheaper to replace with a used one than rebuilding it. Thanks.

I found a manual tranny out of a Mazda B4000 2007 4.0L 4x4. Will this work in my 2003? Is it the same transmission? Thank you.

Another issue, every place I check with says there is a listing for two different transmissions for the 2003 truck but no one can tell me the difference or what tranny they are.

As far as I know all 2001-2011 4.0L M5OD (R1HD) transmissions are the same. That '07 one should work no problem.

I just checked with a wrecker after about the 30th place I have phoned. He was the only one that said the difference between my 1L54-ma and the 1L54-hb is the tail housing which can be swapped between the two. I have only found about 4 of the ma style like mine in all the online parts data bases in Canada. There are lots of the hb styles. Is this true? There are none local in my town to check to see if they are the same.

Maybe one has the threaded bosses for the manual transfer case shifter to bolt to it, and the other doesn't? That's about the only difference I can think there would be. If you have the push-button / turn-dial 4WD, this wouldn't matter for yours. But if your truck is the manual t-case FX4 (LII), then you need another one like yours (or to swap the ext. housings).

Yah, mine is the manual 4x4 shift, not electronic.

As well the electronic or manual shift would be in the transfer case and should have nothing to do with the transmission???? I am assuming this lol. I have owned and worked on all my cars and this is the first truck I have owned and its for work. I am a little confused about this. I have found a 2003 ranger fx4 manual 4x4 and it has a electronic 4x4 shift for it. I am getting the motor and tranny/transfer case for 550.00. I am hopeing the transmission is the same, if I have to swap the tail housing I am fine with that.

If you look under your truck, you'll see the shifter handle for the 4WD is bolted to the side of the transmission extension housing.

Worse gets to worse, just swap the housings.

Well the transmissions are the same, the only thing different was the tail housing. Just mounts for the manual lever 4x4 were different from the electronic. Swapped tail housing over and is running good.
