hey everyone, i want to put a lower and upper intake from a 2002 (plastic ones) on my 99 3.0 motor (aluminum one), i noticed the egr and smog crap from my 99 are different, anyone every done this swap? where do i put the crap since there is no mounting and no place to connect it?

Why do you want to change? You'd probably see just as much benefit, or more by porting/polishing your stock intakes. Plus you don't have to move the coil pack. Other than the coil pack, what would you have to move? Maybe a picture would help? I have a Taurus composite, and there is almost no difference between it and my aluminum upper. (both engines are FFV's with egr)

can i just change the uppers? with out changing the lowers?

The number, and size of the bolts that hold the upper intake onto the lower intake is different. The 98-00 had 6 bolts that I think were 8mm. The 01 had 6 bolts that were 6mm, and the 02 had 4 6mm bolts. (I'm just going from memory on the sizes, so I could be wrong on the exact sizes, but the 02 mounting bolts are definitely smaller than the 98-00)
To put the aluminum upper from a 98-00 onto the 02 lower, you'd have to drill/tap the lower intake for the larger diameter bolts. If you want to put the composite upper onto the older lower intake, you'd have to drill and tap the upper intake mounting holes. And you'd have to figure out a way to mount the coil pack since there's no way to mount it directly to the composite upper intake.

What you can do, is swap both the lower and upper from your truck onto the newer engine, and you wouldn't have to drill/tap anything. Put fresh intake gaskets on while you're at it.

What i would like to do is use the upper and lower on the 2002 since it is already on the motor I'm putting in the 99 ranger, i guess the real question is what do i do with the egr smog crap?, i can fab up a bracket for the coil pack no biggie. i have to keep the smog crap for the state emmisions. anyone ever done this before? if i leave the egr off will it throw a check engine light?

We really need more info about what's different. Does the 02 motor not have egr? Pictures would really help. You can post pics here by uploading to a hosting site like photobucket first, then copying the image's "img" code, and pasting it here.
Yes, removing the egr will cause a CEL. It can be deleted from the PCM using a handheld tuner like an SCT to eliminate the CEL, but that may still throw red flags on an emissions test. Not sure.

An 02 motor does not have an EGR valve, So in order to run your 99 EGR setup your going to need to find a way (divorced Setup) to add your valve to the 02 manifold. Without seeing the 99 valve and how it attaches to the stock manifold its hard to explain what you need to do. There might be a way to tune it out as well electronically, but your going to need a tuner to do that as well, and that may be an emissions testing issue for you as well.

Coil mount is easy, the later model valve covers have the coil mount bosses built into them although I am not sure if your 99 coil has the correct coil spacing, but a plate mount would be very easy to make to use with these valve covers.

Huh. My 03 Taurus motor had an EGR valve. Must have been something they did away with on the Rangers only.

Could have been, they do not have the dreaded DPFE valve either, oh what a good year! All they have is the PCV valve, & evap solenoid.
