I have a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 3.0L and in the past few weeks i have installed brand new alternator, starter, fuel filter, coil pack, plug wires and plugs and it still seams to hesitate (crank alot) before it finally starts....any ideas???

Went to advanced auto other day and was informed by a experienced mechanical person there that i could be fuel pump loosing its prime.

I don't think prime is right way to describe it, but I guess it would work. The pump assembly has a check valve and a pressure regulator in it. Fuel pressure should be about 65 psi when running. And the check valve should hold most of that pressure for weeks when not running.

The fuel pump is turned off 2/3 seconds after the key is turned from off to run. It is not started again until the engine exceeds 300 rpm. It takes about say 30/40 psi for the engine to start (it should be around 65 psi).

So if the is leaking down it would be hard to start the first time (in the morning?). If you shut to down and restart it, it should fire right up.

The pump can build around 15 psi each time it is turned on, so next time you get a hard start, turn the key off and back to run three times and then try to start it. If it starts right up you are on the right track with the pump/check valve.

To verify, you need to check the fuel pressure with a tester. Google to find out how to use the tester. Most (many) parts stores will rent/loan you a tester. If the pressure is leaking down you found the problem.
