2002 3.0 v6 Ranger 4wd questions

2002 3.0 v6 4wd . I found this truck and it is in great shape. It has 227k on it but it has been well taken care of. What type of mpg should I expect? How does this truck hold up in comparison to the 1998-2004 tacomas?

automatic transmission?
from my experiences don't expect good fuel mileage from a 3.0 auto 4wd.
the best it ever did was 15 mpg on the freeway at 65 mph. 3.73 gears.

Are these engines more realiable than the 4.0 v6? Reliability is my main goal. How do the compare to the 2000-2004 3.4 v6 tacomas?

Depending on the year of 4.0 and if you are talking 4.0 OHV or 4.0 SOHC. The 3.0 is generally a very reliable engine. Not a power house but it will get you from point A to point B with little trouble. the 4.0 OHV tends to be a pretty solid engine from what I understand. I don't remember the year but there was a specific year range that had timing chain issues on the 4.0 SOHC. Compared to the Tacoma, the Ranger engines over all, until the 2.3 Ecoboost, the Ranger V6 engines are going to be found wanting.

The Ranger is a fairly reliable vehicle as long as it's taken care of overall. I've had 3 and still currently own 2. I have had Japanese vehicles in the past and have generally had good luck with them as well but many would consider me to be OCD in my care of my vehicles as well. Fix the problems when they are small and cost shouldn't be too bad. Wait until something breaks and it's going to cost a lot more. Be very picky on what you decide to buy and make sure you aren't buying someone else's problems that they didn't want to deal with.

My first Ranger was a 99 3.0 stick 4x4. It was pretty good on gas for a 4x4. At the time I was traveling a lot and would often rent a Ranger from Budget for $19.99 a day. They were 3.0 auto Supercabs, most were 4x4, and they were pretty bad on gas. Mostly because you had to have your foot in it all the time to make it move.

The 3.0 doesn't have a lot of power but they're indestructible as long as there is oil and water in them.
