What about a 2002 Ford Ranger v. 2002 Ford Taurus? Are the long blocks the same? Would there be a lot of modifications other than just swapping some parts from one to the Taurus to get that to work in a Ford Ranger?

I think there are two different 3.0's used in the Taurus.... but if you have the same one as hte ranger, again swapping out the intake and sensors should do you fine. with the Taurus engine you will likely need to swap out the exhaust manifold as well.

Correct. The 2002 Taurus came with either the 3.0 Vulcan (with the same block, heads and intake as used in the Ranger), and the 3.0 Duratec. The Duratec was DOHC, and an entirely different engine.

As I mentioned above, they are the same engine. The heads and blocks are the same. The intake is the same. The exhaust manifolds might be different, because the engine had to be re-oriented in the Ranger.

I believe I have read previously that you have to use the correct gasket kit for the application. The gaskets block or open different passageways for proper cooling of the engine depending on whether you are. mounting it longitudinally (Ranger) or transverse (taurus)

Assuming they're both Vulcans, the head gaskets are different, upper and lower intake manifolds are different, exhaust manifolds are different, oilpans are different (but I kept the Taurus pan on mine and it fits the 2wd/coil spring chassis nicely YMMV).
If you're switching head gaskets, you'll need to budget for new head bolts as well as they're Torque To Yield and should not be reused.
The timing covers can corrode and leak coolant over time, so I'd inspect them closely and use the best one with all new gaskets.

Also, with any 3.0 swap you need to make sure you have the properly sized fuel injectors. Flex Fuel 3.0s came with 24lb injectors and regular fuel 3.0s came with 19lb injectors. If both engines are flex, then it doesn't matter. If both engines are non-flex, then it doesn't matter. But if one is flex and the other isn't, or you're not sure then it's safest to just reuse the injectors from the Ranger.
