2000 warm start issue

My 2000 4 L. Ranger starts and runs normally cold, but if I say, drive a few miles to put gas in it, shut it down, and restart, it doesn't want to restart. I have to pump the gas petal, and it will start after a few seconds of spinning over. Then when I put it into gear, it stalls. This happens a few times until I can get it moving, then it acts normally until I shut it down again, hot. Trying to restart it results in the same abnormal behavior. I replaced the fuel pressure control on top of the intake manifold, with no apparent difference. I have a friend with an OBD 2 sensor and the reading was "low temperature". I then replaced the temp sensor with no effect. The "check engine light" is on. I have never experienced a persistent problem with any vehicle I have ever owned. Thoughts?

Which temp sensor did you replace? There are two on these, the one with two wires is the one that reports to the computer, the other one is the dash gauge.

When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

I changed the single wire one. I wasn't aware of another one. Where is it?

If I remember correctly, it's near the single wire sensor, but it's more on the drivers side of the lower intake. Similar plug, just two wires instead of one.
