2000 Ranger Transmission Slip

My truck is a:
2000 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4
Auto Trans
103k miles


The other day my transmission started slipping. It slips only after the engine is warm, and only when shifting into third gear. The fluid is full and has not been changed since I have owned the truck, I have put about 10k miles on it. The fluid may not have ever been changed. This morning I got an estimate for $2k for a rebuild. The Mechanic said he couldn't even drive the vehicle off his lot and the main piston most likely broken or the main seal was destroyed. I have never had a problem with it pulling out from a dead stop. I think I already know the answer to this issue but just wanted to get some opinions.

well a tranny mechanic is going to try and overplay it, but how bad is it slipping what exactly is it doing? if its only in 3rd gear and not overdrive it may be the torque converter taking a long time to to lock up... meaning probably just need to change fluid and filter. now im not saying put this off by any means but do homework first before you drop 2gs on a rebuild. these transmission have common issues that are easy and cheap to fix

also depends on what motor it is. they do not all have same tranny

There is a delay when Shifting into third, the engine revs and then it catches. My engine is a 6cyl 4.0ltr

What you have is the 2-3 shift flare.
