Hello all,

Helping a friend who lost the one key for the ignition with passive anti theft, I had gotten a copy of it for the door so we could unlock door.

Merles Auto has a new key+cylinder, but how do we program the key to start the Ranger, is there a way if you do that without going to Ford or a shop to program the new key to operate this Ranger?

Thank you all!

NO! You'll save yourself some $$$ since you have a cut key.....so what you need to do is take the truck to a Ford Dealer that will copy the key you have onto 2 PATS keys (it takes 2 to program) and they will program the keys to the truck. At my Dealership the keys are $20 each & $45 to program them, prices will vary from one Dealer to another.

You can also have a locksmith do it, but have no idea of their pricing.

The truck, of course, can't be started without a "working" PATS key, so while taking it to a Dealer is cheaper than a mobile locksmith for what needs to be done, if you have to add a towing bill from trucks location to the dealer then mobile locksmith may be cheaper.

I would make a few calls to see.
The Locksmith needs to have the Ford software to add new keys to the computer/PATs module.
And I would make 3 PATs keys to avoid this in the future.
You can add keys to computer yourself IF(big if) you have 2 Working PATs keys.
So with 3 keys you can lose 1 and still have 2, and can then add another 3rd PATs key hopefully before losing another, lol.

A door key will often not work in the ignition, working ignition key will work in the door.
