Check the picture, this is the only position that the compressor does not kick on and off. Any other spot and it cycles. Is this correct? If not, how do I fix it?

The ac compressor should only kick on when switch is on AC or Max AC .
You have it at the upper vent position, which will allow outside air in thru the upper vents.....no ac, just outside air, whatever it' temp is.

Not quite right. The A/C is used to remove moisture when defrosting/defogger the windows.

I believe it is natural for the compressor to cycle. It does that based on t GJ e pressures caused by the heat load on the system. But if it cycles too frequently, that is a sign of a problem.
 
My bad bout the defrost cycle. But it shouldn't come on when in the vent position, should it ? At least my 2009 dosen't. Never noticed if it came on during defrost cycle...don't use it that often.
 
It will also cycle in the mix position. Off, Floor, and Vent are the only ones where it doesn't engage. Before they were set up that way a lot of compressors would seize from sitting during the cooler/colder months- in NH from late September to late May for example.
 
It is my belief that AC, Max AC, and defrost should be the only spots it cycles the compressor. So ……. any suggestions on why mine isn't working correctly?
 
ACs been designed to run in both windshield positions since at least 1976.

If thats what you want, you will have to rewire the controls to do that.

Does your A/C system cool properly? Or is there a problem with it cooling?
 
I would recommend getting the EVTM for your truck.

Here is a picture of the switch schematic for my 97 F150. Yours should be very similar. There have been slight changes over the years. My 93 Ranger runs A/C any time defrost is selected or A/C is turned on (any vent selection). But it has the older style slider control with pushbutton for A/C.

This shows power to A/C compressor in the following positions (97 F150)
Max A/C, A/C, panel/floor, defrost/floor, defrost

the PCM has the ultimate control of the AC clutch, it activates the AC relay.
 
2001 AC control wiring below

Only positions that have AC OFF are Vent and OFF, all other settings send the 12volt "demand" signal to Computer(PCM), on the Violet(VIO) wire from pin 2 on control knob

My AC works awesome, I see that with you fellas awesome explanation and details that my system is working the way FORD designed it. Well dam.... I don't have to like it tho LOL. Thanks y'all, we can always count on y'all. Case Closed :)
 
They “improved it” around 2009 or so. The A/C system engaged in MAX, A/C, dash and floor, windshield and floor, and windshield only. The only two modes the A/C doesn’t come on is dash only just after the off setting and floor only.

The Japanese got it right when they installed a separate button for the A/C system in their vehicles. The Ranger finally caught up with that with the 2019 model year.
