The Japanese got it right when they installed a separate button for the A/C system in their vehicles. The Ranger finally caught up with that with the 2019 model year.

My 1st gen has a seperate button for it.

As do 87/88 F series trucks, 90s escorts, and im sure others im forgetting.

On 3rd gens, it comes on in defrost mode or you push the fan button in to turn it on for the other modes.

This is how my 87 is. Athough the compressor is seized and unhooked so i dont know when it comes on

In the defrost position at least, the compressor is energized whether you push the button or not. The button allows you to have a/c in the vent position.

well if it is seized and unhooked.... the answer to that question is "never". it is never coming on

They “improved it” around 2009 or so. The A/C system engaged in MAX, A/C, dash and floor, windshield and floor, and windshield only. The only two modes the A/C doesn’t come on is dash only just after the off setting and floor only.

My 2010 Fit the compressor ran in floor/defrost and defrost no matter whether the A/C button (separate button) was pressed or not.

For the record, the 2000-2004 Focus also had a separate button for the A/C.
